05 / Air conditioning & heat pumps
Cooling and hot water sized to the room and the load
Split, cassette and ducted air conditioners, VRF systems and heat pump water heaters sourced direct. A heat pump can heat water on a fraction of a geyser element's electricity, which is why the payback question comes up first — we answer it on your use, not a brochure's.

What we source in this line
Capacities below are the common bands. Tell us the rooms, their size and use, and how much hot water you need, and we'll size the units to it.
| Equipment | Typical range | Worth specifying |
|---|---|---|
| Wall split air conditioners | 9 000 – 24 000 BTU | Inverter compressor, refrigerant type, efficiency rating |
| Cassette units | 18 000 – 60 000 BTU | Ceiling void, airflow pattern, drain pump |
| Ducted units | 24 000 – 120 000 BTU | Static pressure, duct design, zoning |
| Floor-standing units | 24 000 – 60 000 BTU | Throw distance, noise, filters |
| VRF systems | 8 – 60 kW outdoor | Number of indoor units, controls, pipe length |
| Portable air conditioners | 9 000 – 14 000 BTU | Exhaust hose, real cooling output, noise |
| Heat pump water heaters (domestic) | 150 – 300 L | Coefficient of performance, tank material, element backup |
| Heat pumps (commercial) | 5 – 100 kW | Output at low air temperature, refrigerant, controls |
| Pool heat pumps | 5 – 30 kW | Titanium heat exchanger, output, noise |
| Evaporative coolers | 5 000 – 30 000 m³/h | Pad area, water use, climate suitability |
| Industrial fans & HVLS fans | 1 – 7 m | Airflow, motor, mounting |

What actually decides whether it works
Price is the easy part. These are the points that decide your electricity bill and whether the unit lasts.
Size on the room, not on a rule of thumb
Room size, sun, ceiling height, windows and the number of people all change the load. An undersized unit runs flat out and never cools; an oversized one wastes money. Tell us the rooms and we size each unit.
Buy inverter compressors
Inverter air conditioners and heat pumps vary their speed instead of switching on and off. They use less power and are easier on a generator or solar system. We specify inverter models by default.
Refrigerant work needs a registered installer
Installing and servicing air conditioners and heat pumps involves refrigerant gas, and the technician handling it must be registered to do so. Budget for a registered installer; it is also what keeps the warranty valid.
A heat pump's number is its COP
The coefficient of performance tells you how much heat you get per unit of electricity. Ask for it at a realistic winter air temperature, not just the best-case figure, and check the tank material.
Check the refrigerant before you buy
Older refrigerants are being phased out, and technicians and spares follow the common ones. We specify units on widely used refrigerants so they can be serviced here for years.
You're trading the dealer network for the price
That's the honest trade. There is no branded service agent on call. Buy on common platforms with widely available spares, keep a spare fan motor and control board for large systems, and use a registered local installer you trust.
Homeowners, businesses and installers ask these
How much can a heat pump save?
A heat pump typically heats water on a fraction of the electricity a geyser element uses, but the saving depends on how much hot water you use and your tariff. Tell us your household or business and we work it out on your numbers.
Do you install?
No. Installation must be done by a registered installer because of the refrigerant, and that also protects the warranty. We supply the units and can point you to installers.
Will it run on my solar system or generator?
Inverter units usually will, if the system is sized for the load and the starting current. We give you the power figures so your installer can confirm.
Can I get spares later?
We specify units on common refrigerants and platforms for exactly that reason, and quote a spares kit for larger systems.
Tell us the rooms and the hot water, not the model number
Room sizes, how they're used, and how much hot water you need — that's enough for us to come back with options, a landed price in Rand and a realistic delivery date.
- No obligation and no cost to quote
